Glenn Miller

- (1904-44) the US leader of a popular big band which played swing music in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He also wrote music and played the trombone. His band's successes included his theme tune Moonlight Serenade (1938), which he wrote, and In the Mood (1939), Pennsylvania 6-5000 (1940) and Chattanooga Choo-Choo (1941). Miller joined the US Army Air Force as its band leader during the Second World War and was killed when the plane he was travelling in crashed on a flight from England to France.
