- a novel (1861) by Charles Dickens. It is the story of a young man, Pip, who helped a prisoner to escape when he was a boy. Later, the man sends him money, but Pip thinks that it comes from the family of Estella, the girl he loves. He moves to London, expecting to become rich and to marry Estella. He is cruel to the people who looked after him as a child, because he is ashamed of their poverty, but when the money stops coming, and Estella marries somebody else, he goes back to them and learns to be a better person.
