Greenham Common

- a military air base in southern England. In the 1980s when the British government agreed to keep US nuclear missiles (= explosive weapons fired through the air) there, a large group of women set up a camp around it to protest against the weapons. Many of the women were arrested several times, but they usually returned to the camp. Some stayed there until the weapons were taken away in 1991
