- a large, expensive department store (= shop where many types of goods are sold in different departments) in the Knightsbridge area of central London. It claims to be able to supply any article and provide any service. It began in 1834 as a small shop selling food, owned by Charles Henry Harrod (1799-1885). It moved to Knightsbridge in 1849.
