- (c. 1550-c. 1611) an English explorer who, when he was looking for the North-west Passage in 1609–10, discovered what are now called the Hudson River and Hudson bay, a very large sea in north-eastern Canada connected with the North Atlantic by the Hudson strait. In 1611 some of his men turned against him there, and put him in a small boat with his 12-year old son. They were never seen again.
