Henry Wood

- (1869-1944) an English conductor, best known for establishing the Proms. He was one of the greatest conductors of his time, and did much to improve the standard of music in Britain. He introduced the work of many new foreign composers, and allowed women to play in orchestras for the first time. He was made a knight in 1911.
