Arthur Sullivan

- (1842-1900) an English composer. He is best known for the Savoy Operas, a series of operettas (= light comic operas) he wrote with W S Gilbert, which show his skill for writing light, often humorous, music. Gilbert and Sullivan wrote 14 popular operettas, including The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance, which are still performed regularly in Britain. He also wrote serious operas and other pieces of classical music, but they are less well known than the Savoy Operas. He was made a knight in 1883.
