- an organization in Great Britain that gives government or private money to artistic projects with the aim of encouraging the arts (= the theatre, art, music, etc.) and making them more popular. For example, if a theatre company receives money from the Arts Council , it perhaps helps the company to reduce the price of tickets. In 1994 the Arts Council of Great Britain was divided into separate councils for England, Scotland and Wales.
