- a US state in the Middle West which is both agricultural and industrial. It became a state in 1816. Its popular name is the Hoosier State, but nobody knows why. People from Indiana are called Hoosiers, and Americans sometimes joke that they are innocent, old-fashioned farmers. Indianapolis is the capital city and the largest in the state.
