James Madison

- (1751-1836) the fourth US President (1809-17) and one of America's Founding Fathers. He was called the Father of the Constitution because of his important work on that document. He was Secretary of State (1801-8) under President Thomas Jefferson and was then elected President as a Democratic-Republican. He was in office during the War of 1812 and when the British burned the White House in 1814. He later helped to establish the University of Virginia and was the last of the Founding Fathers to die.
