- (1834-1903) a US artist who was educated in France and lived mostly in London after 1859. His best-known painting is usually called Whistler's Mother. In a famous legal case he took John Ruskin to court for publicly criticizing his painting Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket. Whistler won the case but was awarded only a quarter of one penny.
