James Michener

- (1907-97) a US writer who won the Pulitzer Prize for Tales of the South Pacific (1947) based on his experiences there. It was adapted as the musical play and film South Pacific. Michener then mainly wrote historical and adventure novels, most of them very long and based on careful research. They include The Bridges of Toko-Ri (1953), Hawaii (1959), Centennial (1974), Chesapeake (1978) and Alaska (1988). Several of his books were filmed.
