- (1688-1766) the son of James II, also called the Old Pretender. His supporters, the Jacobites, referred to him as James VIII of Scotland and III of England. He lived in France and Italy for most of his life, and claimed that he had a right to be the king of Britain. He came to Scotland in 1715 to lead the Fifteen rebellion, but was defeated by the English.
