- a famous poem (1804) by William Blake, later set to music by Hubert Parry (1848-1918). It expresses the hope for a future Christian society in ‘England's green and pleasant land’ to replace the horrors of ‘the dark Satanic mills ’ of the Industrial Revolution. It is traditionally sung at the Last Night of the Proms as well as by Women's Institutes and in churches.
