- (1626-97) an English writer and archaeologist (= person who studies ancient history by examining objects found under the ground). He studied Stonehenge and Avebury and suggested the idea, which some people still believe today, that Stonehenge was built by Druids. He is now mainly remembered for his book Brief Lives.
