John Barbirolli

- (1899-1970) an English musician and conductor whose family came originally from Italy. He was conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1937 to 1943 and then conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, Manchester, until his death. He was made a knight in 1949.
