- (1906-84) an English poet who wrote humorous popular poems about ordinary people and social situations. He was also well known for his interest in Victorian architecture and his campaigns to preserve Victorian buildings. His best-known work is Summoned by Bells (1960), a long poem about his own life. He was made a knight in 1969 and Poet Laureate in 1972.
