- (1912-1992) a US composer of music who was an important influence on other composers. He used ordinary noises and a 'prepared piano' with items attached to its strings to produce different sounds. His works include the silent Four Minutes 33 Seconds (1952), during which a person sits at a closed piano for that length of time without making a sound.
