John Cockroft

- (1897-1967) the English scientist who, with Ernest Walton, succeeded in splitting the atom at the Cavendish Laboratory in 1932. He was later closely involved with Britain's nuclear energy programme and was the first director of the research centre at Harwell. He was made a knight in 1948 and he and Walton shared the Nobel Prize for physics in 1951.
