John Pershing

- (1860-1948) the army officer who commanded the US Expeditionary Force in France in the First World War. General Pershing's popular name was 'Black Jack' because of his tough discipline. He had earlier served in the Indian wars and the Spanish-American War. He received the Pulitzer Prize for his book My Experiences in the World War (1931). The US nuclear weapon called the Pershing missile is named after him.
