John Ruskin

- (1819-1900) an English writer and artist. He supported the work of J M W Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites and was a leading figure in the Gothic Revival. In 1869 he became the first Professor of Art at University, and his books about art include Modern Painters (1843-60) and The Stones of Venice (1851-3). He also wrote about social justice and was in favour of better educational opportunities for working people. Ruskin College, , is named after him. His house in the Lake District is kept as a museum.
