- (1870-1945) the young English aristocrat who was Oscar Wilde's lover when Wilde was arrested and sent to prison for homosexuality (= a sexual relationship between people of the same sex), which was illegal at that time. The long letter that Wilde wrote in prison, published later as De Profundis (1897), was addressed to Douglas.
