Marian Anderson

- (1902-93) a US singer. In 1939 she was prevented from entering a hall to give a concert by the Daughters of the American Revolution because she was black, so she gave a free concert from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In 1955, she became the first black singer to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
