/ˌmeɪtrɪks ˈtʃɜːrtʃɪl/
- a British engineering company which became well known in 1992 when three of its directors were accused of having sold military equipment to Iraq, against official British government policy. The case against the directors collapsed when Alan Clark, who had been the government minister for trade, admitted in court that he had advised the company not to be completely honest about what they were exporting. This caused a big political scandal in Britain. The directors were found not guilty and the matter became the subject of an official inquiry.
