- the capital city of the US state of Alabama. It is on the Alabama River, and is sometimes called the ' Cradle of the Confederacy' because the city was also the first capital of the Confederate States. Martin Luther King began the US civil rights movement in Montgomery when he led an African American refusal to use the buses there.
