- a BBC television comedy series (1969-74). It was extremely popular with young people, especially students, and its strange, wild and silly humour had a big influence on British comedy. It consisted of sketches (= short comic plays) with no logical connection. Among the most well known of these are the dead parrot sketch and the Ministry of Silly Walks. It was written and performed by a team of people who had met at or Cambridge Universities. Today the most famous of these are John Cleese and Michael Palin. After the television series, the team wrote and acted in several successful comedy films.
