- the main character in a series of US children's books written by Carolyn Keene, a name used by several writers, including Mildred Augustine Wirt. Nancy is a young amateur detective who solves mysteries. The series began in 1929 with The Secret of the Old Clock and is still being published. By 2004 over 200 million copies had been sold. There have been film and television series as well as computer games.
