- the capital city of the US state of Tennessee, in the northern central part of the state. It was settled on the Cumberland River in 1779 as Fort Nashborough and its name was changed in 1784. It is the centre of the country music industry and among its attractions are the Grand Ole Opry. It is also known as a centre for religious education and for Vanderbilt University.
