Nob Hill

- a fashionable district of San Francisco, California. It includes Grace Cathedral and two famous hotels, the Fairmont and the Mark Hopkins. Many of the large Victorian houses originally built there by rich people, or ' nobs', were destroyed by the fire that followed the 1906 earthquake (= sudden, violent movement of the earth's surface).
