- a state in the north-eastern US, also called the Keystone State for its central position among the 13 original states. The largest city is Philadelphia, and the capital city is Harrisburg. The area was established for Quakers in 1681 by William Penn, who named it Pennsylvania ('Penn's small forest') for his father. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought there during the American Civil War. The state produces chemicals, medicines, electronic equipment and farm products. Tourist attractions include Valley Forge and the Pennsylvania Dutch region.
