Philip Henry Sheridan

- (1831-1888) a US military leader in the Civil War. General Sheridan commanded the Army of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia and defeated the Confederate army there in 1864. He later forced the army of General Robert E Lee to surrender (= admit defeat) near Appomattox Court House (1865).
