- a US industrial city in western Pennsylvania where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers come together to form the Ohio River. It began in 1758 as Fort Pitt, named after William Pitt. For a century until the 1980s, it was a centre for iron and steel production. Pittsburgh now produces high technology products and leads the world in medical operations for replacing body organs.
