- a private US radio company that broadcasts to some countries in central and eastern Europe and Asia that are considered not to have politically free media of their own. Many of these countries were part of the former Soviet Union. The company is supported with money from the US government. Its main office is in Prague, Czech Republic, and it broadcasts each day in 25 languages to 20 countries. Radio Free Europe was established in 1950 for some eastern European countries, and Radio Liberty began broadcasting in 1953 for countries of the Soviet Union. They joined together in 1976. The programmes are about US and world news and topics, including the arts.
