Routemaster
noun /ˈruːtmɑːstə(r)/
/ˈruːtmæstər/
- a double-decker bus (= a bus with two levels), designed in 1954, used in London and popular with tourists. There was an open platform at the back where people get on and off and money for tickets was collected by a conductor. Routemasters were replaced by buses where the driver gives out or checks the tickets and there is no open platform, and after 2005 they only ran on two short routes in the centre of London, mainly for tourists. In 2014 only one route remained that used the original Routemaster. A modern design of Routemaster (the New Routemaster), similar to the old one and also with an open platform at the back, was introduced in 2012.
