- a large group of supermarkets in the US. The Safeway company was founded in 1926 and is based in California. The UK part of the business was taken over by Morrisons in 2004; some stores were sold off and others were named Morrisons. In 2016 Morrisons announced that the Safeway brand would be brought back for certain products.
