San Andreas Fault

- a break in the layers of rock forming the earth's surface that runs about 600 miles north to south through the US state of California. It causes earthquakes (= sudden, violent movements of the earth's surface), such as those in San Francisco (1906 and 1989) and Los Angeles (1994).
