- a city in western California, in the Santa Clara Valley. Because of the many computer and electronics companies there, the area is often called Silicon Valley. San Jose also produces fruit and wine. It was the capital of California from 1849 to 1851. An earthquake (= a sudden, violent movement of the earth's surface) in 1989 caused some damage.
