- (1925-81) the US singer who, with his group the Comets, first made rock and roll popular. They recorded Shake, Rattle and Roll and then Rock Around the Clock, which Haley wrote. It was used in the film The Blackboard Jungle (1955) and became an international hit, with 22.5 million copies sold.
