- a south-eastern US state on the Atlantic Ocean, also called the Palmetto State. The capital and largest city is Columbia. The state was named after the English king Charles I and was one of the original thirteen colonies. It produces textiles, fruit, tobacco, chickens and cattle. Its tourist attractions include the Fort Sumter National Monument and the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia.
