Stafford Cripps

- (1889-1952) a British labour politician who is best remembered for his policy of ' austerity' after World War Two, when as Chancellor of the Exchequer he kept a tight control over Britain's economy. He was the nephew of Beatrice Webb, and was made a knight in 1930.
