Blackpool

- a town on the coast of Lancashire in north-west England. In the past it was a popular holiday place for workers in the Lancashire cotton mills (= factories). Its famous beach is 7 miles/11 kilometres long, and the town offers a lot of entertainment. The Blackpool Tower is a famous landmark in the area. It was built in 1894 out of metal, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and is 520 feet/158 metres high. Blackpool is also famous for the Blackpool illuminations, an event in the autumn when the Tower and the streets are lit up every night for several weeks with thousands of coloured lights.
