St Andrew

- (1st century AD) the patron saint of Scotland. He was one of the 12 Apostles, the brother of St Peter. He became the patron saint of the Picts in the 8th century, when, it is thought, his bones were brought to a town on the east coast of Scotland, later called St Andrews. According to tradition, he was killed in Greece on a cross in the shape of an X, and so this cross is on the Scottish flag. Andrew is also the patron saint of Greece and Russia.
