- the national saint of England. Many people believe he was a Christian martyr (= a person who is killed because of their religious beliefs) in the third century. According to the legend, he killed a dragon (= a fierce imaginary animal that can fly and breathe fire) to save a woman. He is often shown in pictures fighting the dragon.
