- a US student political organization in the 1960s which opposed the Vietnam War. It was begun in 1960 and spread to many colleges and universities. Its members organized street protests which led to arrests outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968. A year later, it divided into smaller groups but they did not exist for long. A new left-wing student organization called SDS started in the US in 2006. They protest against wars and campaign for student rights.
