/ði ˌæntənaɪn ˈwɔːl/
- a wall built in 142 AD across southern Scotland during the reign of the Roman emperor (= ruler) Antoninus Pius. It was about 37 miles/59 kilometres long and was intended to replace Hadrian's Wall further south as the northern frontier (= limit) of the Roman Empire, but it had to be abandoned by 197 AD. Little of the wall now remains.
