- a weight loss programme developed by Dr. Robert Atkins (1930-2003) which involves limiting the amount of carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, etc., that you eat and replacing them with more protein and fat, such as meat, butter, etc. People who follow the diet are expected to lose weight because their body will burn more fat for energy. The diet became very popular in the US and Britain in the mid-2000s.
