- a programme of activities for young people between the ages of 14 and 24. It was started in Britain in 1956 by the Duke of Edinburgh and others. The Award has become international and is known by different names in some countries, such as the Congressional Award in the US. Young people choose a personal interest to develop and also do community service and outdoor activities. Awards for achievement are given at three levels: bronze, silver and gold. The Award scheme is operated mainly by schools and youth organizations.
