- William Pitt, also called Pitt the Elder (1708-78) a British Whig Prime Minister (1756-61 and 1766-86) who was called the Great Commoner because he was so popular in the country. He was also known as a great speaker in Parliament, and successfully led Britain in the Seven Years War against France.
