- one of the world's largest public trusts (= organizations providing money for projects that help society). It was established in the US in 1936 by Henry Ford and his son Edsel Ford for the state of Michigan, and in 1950 it became a national and international organization. It gives or lends large amounts of money, especially to projects for democracy, world peace and justice, education and the arts, science and communication. The Foundation also helped to establish the US public broadcasting service.
