- a large shallow lake in the US state of Utah whose water is saltier than seawater. It is the largest salt lake in North America, about 72 miles/116 kilometres long and 30 miles/48 kilometres wide. Industry takes salt and other minerals from it. Five miles south-east of the lake is Salt Lake City. To the west is the Great Salt Lake Desert with the Bonneville Salt Flats where drivers have established the highest speeds on land.
